I don’t think McCain would but if he did and the Democrats had any brains they’d put up three or four billboards along I-15 with select quotes about the Mormons.

Some months back -- when Huckabee looked as though he could be the GOP presidental nominee -- I suggested that Barack Obama could gain traction about Latter-day Saints with a statement like this one.

I frankly think that Obama's associations with Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers have pretty much sunk any chance he's had on making serious inroads, but were McCain to pick Huckabee, we all might be surprised. ..bruce..

If McCain chooses Huckabee for VP (unlikely but interesting to consider), it will be interesting to see the long term effects on LDS "loyalty" to the GOP. The anti-Mormon movement in this election has left me feeling almost betrayed by the party I supported strongly for nearly 35 years. It's hard to imagine large numbers of conservative Mormons becoming Democrats. Would Utah ultimately have more influence in Congress (as tie-breakers) if it were represented by a newly revived Peoples Party? I hope the book also discusses attacks on Mormonism from the Left which seem to be more vicious and overt than from the Right.

This was a great interview. Thanks for doing this. I'll have to consider buying the book. The tolerance for anti-Mormonism is staggering. The real problem, IMO, is that the evangelicals have highjacked the political right to use it to promote their agenda of intolerance. The ideology of social conservativism has become activism.

Fascinating stuff. So glad to come across this post. I'd be curious to see how the book actually answers the question: "A different God?". This seems to be one of the most key talking points from the vitriolic anti-Mormon evangelicals whom I've encountered.

Seth R--I didn't listen enough to hear any embarrassment from Brother Hannity. I mostly heard the same things over and over, punctuated with the use of the words "excoriate" and "vitriol." I have a strong suspicion that Brother Sean found those two words in "How To Talk Good Like a College Graduate."

Keep in mind Margaret, it was Hannity, O'Reilly, Ingrahm and other Conservative Radio personalities who were pleading - begging - people not to vote for Huckabee and hand the nomination to McCain. Romney was their decided favorite.

And the GOP base decidedly ignored them.

It was kind of an embarrassment for talk radio actually. They suddenly realized that they didn't have half the influence they thought they did.

I think we need a contest. I predict that Romney will be the VP choice, and if I'm right, I want a copy of the Foster/Bringhurst book as a prize.

I've been paying close attention (including--gag--listening to Sean Hannity) and everything I'm hearing says ROMNEY.

A sad parallel: Ann Romney has MS, which is what killed Michelle Obama's father. I'll bet the two wives would have lots to talk about.

Thanks, Craig and J.

It is a measure of my ignorance and naivete that I was surprised by the aggressive attack on Mitt's religion by Huckabee, et. al., and also that there were no hands slapped for it. There have been emails passed around my work which feature a "Christian call to action" where the possibility of a Mormon on one ticket and a man whose middle name is Hussein on the other is seen as evedence that America is no longer a christian nation.

That kind of crapola makes me sick to my stomach.
